Laying Aside Every Weight

This is my first post of the new year, and it’s a short one. I hope you have all had a great start to 2012. I’m really excited for what this year holds, although I don’t have any resolutions (see why in my last post).

Today, I just want to share some thoughts and verses that have been on my mind lately.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2

I really like how the writer of Hebrews mentions every weight and sin which clings to us and not just every sin. It’s clear that not everything which holds us back from growing, walking and abiding in Christ is inherently sinful.

We often don’t realize that “good” things in our lives can keep us distracted, looking away from Jesus.

Consider what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians:

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. – 1 Corinthians 10:23

There are things that I can do that are not inherently bad, some things that are even really good. But if they have my eyes, thoughts and attention more than Christ then there is an issue.

Just some thoughts as I’ve been thinking about spiritual discipline lately. I’d love to hear any scripture or thoughts that you might add to this in the comments below.

Acts 20:23 Paul said he doesn’t even account his life as any value. Not even his own life is distracting him. Pretty amazing.

This last one is because I didn’t check the notification boxes on the last two.

Hi Travis. Paul saw knowing Christ as the greatest thing possible. And even near the end of his very full life his heart cry was “…that I might know Him.” There is always more of Him to know. Thanks for sharing! I look forward hearing more you on the site :)
